Abstract:
The research project “ABC – Ancient Book Crafts” focuses in its third year on the systematic study and documentation of late medieval bookbindings (14th–16th centuries) from the Abbey Library of Klosterneuburg. With approximately 1200 medieval manuscripts and 885 incunabula, it is one of Austria’s largest extant libraries. The interdisciplinary team analyses materials, binding techniques, and decorative tools, compiles a comprehensive database, and develops a scientifically-based dating model for leather bookbindings (Molecular Decay Dating) using FTIR spectroscopy. This research provides new insights into provenance, workshop practices, and the evolution of Klosterneuburg bookbinding, combining historical, codicological, and material science approaches.
